Lonely? Try Leadership!

Change of role
New boss
Reorganisation
New team
Revised strategy
Internal politics
Change in Customer requirements
Etcetera, etcetera...

When faced with such challenges, who does a leader go to for guidance and perspective? Who can assist in working through several critical questions? These include:

  • What are the consequences?
  • What does it mean for me?
  • How should I best respond?
  • What skills and tools do I need to make a success of this?
  • Is my approach and attitude right?
  • Who can help me with this issue?
  • How honest can I afford to be?

The high expectations placed on leaders and the visibility they have within the business can make it difficult to openly discuss these sorts of issues for fear that ‘going public’ may be regarded as a sign of weakness or self-doubt.

Furthermore, in some cases a leader’s own pride or denial of reality gets in the way of open communication around these topics which only exacerbate a feeling of isolation.

Leaders often choose not to share their concerns and needs with others but instead sit tight and hope that experience and their own judgement will see them through – and sometimes their strategy works!

However, as business change accelerates and organisations become more demanding, leaders need to speak up and engage. They need to gain new insight, ideas and approaches. They need to embrace new leader perspectives and opinion that have relevance to their circumstances. They need to know that they have someone they can trust, who adds value to the leadership challengeand who can focus one hundred per cent on their success.

This is where an Executive Coach with the right expertise can make a huge difference.

The Trapeze approach to Coaching

We believe Coaching needs to be:

Goal driven – both business and personal
Confidential – nothing is shared without the coachee’s permission
Finite – six to eight sessions, no more
Energising – not too much time between sessions with lots of communication in between
Geared to quick results – early, on the ground ‘experiments’ to turn ideas into action.

We first of all take time to really understand your business, its challenges and priorities and critically, the coachee’s role, objectives and current performance level.

We then ensure absolute clarity on the Coaching goals. We do this through consultation with the coachee, his or her line manager, HR and any other relevant key stakeholders.

Coaching sessions are half day duration – long enough to make real headway, short enough to keep focus and attention levels high.

The coaching style is totally pragmatic and results-focus with the emphasis on ‘real-world’ guidance and support rather than over-generalised theory.

Content is non-prescriptive with built in flexibility to accommodate ‘live’ leadership challenges as they emerge.

The process is equally effective for senior executives with existing leadership responsibilities as it is for emerging ‘rising stars’ with leadership aspirations.
